- PUNTUEUS has been present at the ICANN75 global meeting, which is being held this week in the capital of Malaysia
- In 2021, the Basque entity detected and resolved a total of 277 abuse activities, “85% were domains created for malicious purposes”, says the CEO of PUNTUEUS, Josu Waliño
Elgoibar, September 21, 2022. PUNTUEUS is present at the ICANN75 conference that is being held this week, between September 17 and 22, in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), where it has presented its cybersecurity model to the highest representatives of the international Internet industry.
This edition of the assembly, which is organized annually by the non-profit organization ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), has focused mainly on the cyber security of Internet domains, with the cyber security model of .EUS also as protagonist. PUNTUEUS is a member of ICANN and has an active presence in decision-making areas that affect Internet governance.
In one of the talks on the program, dedicated to GeoTLD geographical reference domains, Josu Waliño, CEO of PUNTUEUS, explained the keys to this model, based on public-private collaboration through the agreements it has with the main cybersecurity official institutions (BCSC and IZENPE) related to the Basque Government. Waliño also highlighted that PUNTUEUS is an active member of the main cybersecurity associations both in the Basque Country and in the rest of the world.
Likewise, to guarantee the digital security of .EUS users, the web pages of this domain are permanently monitored by PUNTUEUS using cybersecurity tools. This active monitorization allows us to identify and solve inappropriate uses, risks and threats on the websites.
“Thanks to the tools we use to prevent threats, in 2021 we detected and processed 277 risks,” Waliño pointed out. He also added that “of those domains 85%, have been “malignant” domains created with a harmful purpose and the majority (200) were created by algorithms, while the rest (35) were suspected of malicious intentions.”. These domains were detected and suspended by PUNTUEUS.
The rest of the domains detected thanks to these monitorization systems were compromised by a third party. “Once identified, the attack was reported and the owners of the websites were helped to solve the problem, since it is common for those responsible of the website to know nothing about the attacks until we notify them,” Waliño said.
PUNTUEUS, protagonist of the GAC session
In addition to Waliño’s presentation, within the framework of the ICANN75 congress held in Malaysia, the Government Advisory Council (GAC) held a session to analyze cybersecurity, in which the Chair of the GeoTLD Group Nacho Amadoz also presented the . EUS Cybersecurity model.
The GAC, which has representatives from states around the world, is one of ICANN’s most important working groups and has spent more than two decades informing and advising the organization on government policies on the Internet considering geopolitical issues.
ICANN is a non-profit organization created in 1998 that brings together organizations from around the world with the intention of creating a secure, stable, and interactive Internet. The association promotes competition and develops unique identifier policies on the Internet. However, it cannot control the content of the Internet or manage access to the network, but thanks to its work in coordinating the Domain Name System, it is of great importance in its dissemination and evolution.
